Singapore or Offshore?

Thailand is one of the most popular destinations for breast implant surgery.  However, if one were to compare the costs, it is likely that breast implant surgery in Thailand may prove to be a more costly and risky affair than previously thought.  More importantly, it is critical to be able to communicate your wishes to the surgeon performing the procedure so that there is a correct match of expectations.

If you include a caregiver and their expenses, the cost of doing it overseas may even be higher than doing it locally.  In addition, there is significant followup needed after breast implant surgery to check on wound healing, scar healing and subsequently if there are other complications.  Therefore it is advisable that you are relatively well connected with your doctor and have reasonable good rapport and support from the surgeon.

Also, please check that cheaper facilities are providing you FDA approved implants.  To date, there are only 2 brands which are Mentor and Allergan.

Hospital or Day Surgery?

Latest breast implant techniques and local anaesthetic techniques using tumescent anaesthesia and local anaesthesia have improved the overall safety of the procedures.  Some surgeons still perform this surgery under general anaesthesia, which means that you are put completely to sleep and cannot breathe by yourself, while a machine breathes for you.  This is associated with high anaesthesia risk and you will need to be hospitalized, thus that may be unacceptable for a cosmetic surgery.  Some surgeons use a much lighter anaesthesia, using painkillers and sleeping medicine to make you drowsy.  This is much safer, and with this method, you should not have to stay overnight at the hospital.  In both methods, you should not feel any pain during the surgery.  Therefore the day surgery method is much preferred to staying in the hospital, unless you are extremely worried and need deep sedation.

If you were to choose, please choose a clinic uses a MOH accredited day surgery facility.  This ensures a certain standard of care and sterility that is required to prevent postoperative infections and good intraoperative care.
